UEFA have confirmed that a record breaking 487,683 people have already attended Women’s Euro 2022 ahead of Sunday’s final between hosts England and record eight-time winners Germany.
That figure is more than double the previous cumulative attendance record for a Women’s European Championship of 240,055 set five years ago at Euro 2017 in Netherlands.
The overall figure for Euro 2022 will smash through the 500,000 barrier by the end of the tournament at the weekend. The capacity for Wembley is set at 87,000, which could push total cumulative attendance beyond 570,000 if all those with tickets turn up.
Given that the host nation are in the final and Euro 2022 has gripped the nation in the days before and since the 4-0 thrashing of Sweden in the semi-final, chances are strong.
What’s more, a sold-out Wembley would also mean a new all-time record for the highest attendance at a European Championship final in either the men’s or women’s tournaments. The current record is 79,115 and has stood since 1964 when Spain faced the Soviet Union in Madrid.
Of those who have attended games at Euro 2022 this month, nearly 100,000 have been children, with the tournament inspiring the next generation. The crowds have also been made up of 47% of female fans, with 53% of those in attendance male.
“Whoever comes out on top, England against Germany at the iconic Wembley Stadium will be one for the history books and an unforgettable event for a whole generation,” said Nadine Kessler, UEFA Chief of Women’s Football and a Women’s EURO 2013 winner.
“For all the lucky ones, who have a ticket for the final, we are looking forward to seeing you at Wembley breaking another attendance record and supporting your team!”
Aside from total attendance, Euro 2022 has also set various Women's Euro attendance records throughout the tournament, including highest attendances at games not involving a host nation at every stage of the competition, plus overall records for quarter-finals and semi-finals.
