“Ost = Horai” (Osuto Hourai)
“Ost Hourai”
Don’t deny, you had an inkling this would be the case. Spirit Tortoise brought to heel only five episodes in? Please, we need more to justify this bit as an arc and what better way than by going for the charm of a third try. Even if said charm could’ve been avoided if Naofumi had only listened from the start. Being the Shield Hero is suffering indeed – or at least being Rishia is, because we know who got hurt the most by this reveal.
Considering how the events with the Spirit Tortoise have played out, it’s probably not that eye opening to some that Ost is effectively the reason the big scaly monster doesn’t want to die. After all, chop off a head and eviscerate a heart and you’d anticipate any creature succumbing to the loving embrace of death. Yet for all the predictability Ost’s predicament does fit with the natural progression of Tate no Yuusha thus far. Much as the first season was about having Naofumi and Raphtalia come to terms with the expectations placed on their shoulders and dealing with the responses of others to it, this one is about fully growing into the roles they have. Whether that be quickly accepting what must be done or putting up walls to ensure it is done, the Shield Hero’s party is no longer one of hesitation, but rather one willing to openly embrace what they must become. Expect to see lots of this hardened resolve as the challenges grow more challenging.
Speaking of challenging, we also got our first good test of the new and improved Naofumi in Kyo Ethnina. Much as with the Spirit Tortoise there shouldn’t be any real shocks here: the guy is another hero (from Glass’ world to boot), he’s after the power of the Spirit Tortoise for reasons yet unknown, and also has the attitude needed to ensure the resulting schadenfreude from the upcoming Naofumi beatdown is tasty indeed. Of course the really interesting tidbit is that each of these worlds has their own spirit monster existing (somewhat explaining L’Arc’s familiarity with it and what Kyo is actually after), but in general the upcoming fight will be one of crushing the Spirit Tortoise before it crushes the nearby VIPs.
Whether or not Ost survives the process, well, that’s something we’ll just have to watch unfold.
